Should Magazines come with a 'Health Warning?

I was browsing through Twitter today, and found the most interesting article by the Daily Mail online here.

Thought I would share it with you all as this is something that i really believe should happen! We cannot blame the media for every persons negative self confidence and as the cause of eating disorders but many of us do look at those 'perfect' images and wish that could be us, you finish reading a magazine sometimes and feel so rubbish! As I said before it is not the sole cause of anything but it is a step towards change.

Many people especially younger, think these images are real as they are not told any different in the magazine. We look at say a top in a catalogue, and we wouldnt be very happy if, when we reicieved this, it actually looked totally differet because it had been photoshopped (if we were told beforehand though it would be a different story), so why should this be any different with models etc.. in magazines?

We all need to keep following in the footsteps of the likes of MP Jo Swinson with her Campaign for Body Confidence  which already has stopped a couple of campaigns going out that were extremely untouched and continue to make a difference.

Photoshopped Fergie: New software claims to be able to identify where - and how much - an image has been retouched

The Journey of my book ‘HOPE with Eating Disorders’

As many of you may already know I have been writing a book called ‘HOPE with Eating Disorders’ for the past 2 years! It has been a rollercoaster to say the least but… it is almost finished!! It is being published in April 2012 by HayHouse publishers. We have decided on the front cover, but I will show you all when it has been confirmed!
The reason I first decided to write this book is very different to what the book is about now. Someone once said to me your story is so inspirational and I think you should write a book about it. So this was literally going to be me writing families story, so from when my daughter developed her eating disorder to me becoming a counsellor…I must admit that would have made a very interesting book, but would it actually help many people? Maybe not so much. So as the book continued it developed into a help guide for carers of eating disorders – Parents, Teachers, Siblings, Friends and many more. And actually even for people not affected by an eating disorder, maybe if someone just wants to understand them more.
My writing is from the heart and I speak from first-hand experience, my main motto is – ‘not one thing works for every person’ – this is what I have found not only from my experience but all my many clients I have worked with. As you read my blog more and more you will gain the knowledge form all aspects with how to cope with or just to understand eating disorders.

Introduction

Hi All,

I am so excited to start my blog! But first I thought I would introduce myself to you all.

My name is Lynn Crilly, I am married and have twin Daughters aged 20. My main writing will be about Body Image and Eating Disorders as this is something so very close to my heart. I am currently writing a book about Eating Disorders and Body Image called 'HOPE with Eating Disorders' this will be published by Hay House in April 2012. www.lynncrilly.co.uk/mybook.aspx.

After one of my gorgeous twin daughters suffered from Anorexia for a long and very hard 3 years (she is now fully recovered), I decided to become a counsellor for others in the same position we were in, and I have had a very high success rate. I am building a reputation of being the alternative therapist (like the one from 'The Kings Speech'. I use love and passion to help people through this such difficult time...and it works!

I work with and support many campaigns for Body Confidence and Eating Disorders, I know so many people are affected by low self-esteem and body confidence and I know I can make a difference.

Changing the subject my personal interests are going swimming EVERY morning, spending lots and lots of time with my family.
Keep your eye out on my blog as I will be discussing many topics that will be of interest to you!

Love as always

Lynn
